Rondebosch

Information

The Rondebosch Common
University of Cape Town

Rondebosch is the popular choice of suburb for students as it is the home of the University of Cape Town (UCT). This ‘fountain of knowledge’ enjoys a beautiful location on the slopes of Devil’s Peak.

Another symbol of Rondebosch lies in the very centre – an actual fountain.  Its claim to fame is that it’s said to be near the exact spot where Van Riebeeck issued the first permanent title of land in Africa. It is also said that the first electric street light in Cape Town was installed in its lamp.

Other landmarks include Groote Schuur, the Presidential home where Nelson Mandela and FW de Klerk signed the Groote Schuur Minute which signalled the beginning of the end of Apartheid and the Rondebosch Common, where you are almost certain to see a runner or dog walker. The Common is a large greenbelt and National Monument, home to unique indigenous plant species.
